So, what’s happening in these 3rd grade Need in Deed classrooms? Through choral reading and piecing together puzzle poems in small groups, these Kirkbride students are considering what it means to be part of a community. In this nonjudgmental atmosphere, students are taking greater risks and showing confidence writing poems. In some cases, they are sharing their thoughts aloud first, creating a bridge to the writing process and resulting in students sharing unique stories. It is so lovely to hear student voices soar!
This connection to poetry is part of an exciting pilot program. Cathy Cohen, founder of ArtWell’s We the Poets, is facilitating poetry workshops designed to match Need in Deed’s MyVoice framework, in collaboration with two experienced 3rd grade Need in Deed teachers: Sara Caselle and Rachel Grant.
