We are listening to our students.
Our Need in Deed classrooms are hard at work despite the challenges that online learning presents. In the beginning stages of Need in Deed’s My Voice process, teachers and students build their classroom communities, getting to know one another and sharing their gifts and talents.
These “I Am” poems, written by 4th and 5th-grade Need in Deed students at Spruance School, are just a few examples of how our students define themselves and their dreams for the kind of world they want to grow up in.
Using poetry is just one way our teachers weave critical academic skills like writing with building a classroom environment where students feel safe to share information about who they are and what concerns them.
This year, Need in Deed is proud to welcome over 30 teachers to our city-wide network. They join a thriving community of over 100 educators in more than 50 Philadelphia district and charter schools committed to bringing student-driven, community-centered service- learning to their classrooms.
We are in awe of our talented students and their creative teachers and we cannot wait to see how they will use their voices to create a better world.
